Loved Hadrian VIIth and The Desire & Pursuit of the Whole when I was young - wonder what I'd think of them now. Do you have to be Catholic to enjoy them? Hadrian VIIth made a good play - performed at my brother's Catholic Grammar School in West London...

I am not a Catholic (nor indeed a failed artist or a paedophile), but I like Rolfe a lot. I think it's the snipiness that stops tantalisingly short of being high camp. He's like a more focussed Ronald Firbank. The book that made me put this post up was -Stories Toto Told Me-, whiuch I hadn't read before: I found a copy in a secondhand bookshop and had a good wallow. Even minor Rolfe is good Rolfe.
